Trump Targets Bill Barr, Calls Him a “Coward”

( – Former United States Attorney General William Barr has changed his tune in recent months since Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted former President Trump. While Barr’s December 2020 departure from his position seemed to be on amicable terms, both he and Trump have launched attacks against each other this year. After writing a book about his time in the Trump administration, Barr appeared on many media outlets, mostly discussing the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Trump wasted no time addressing Barr’s comments after each interview.

During an August 9 appearance on Newsmax, Trump stated that Barr “was a coward.” He added that Barr didn’t investigate Hunter Biden or the alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential election because “he was afraid he was going to be impeached.” In the months between the election and Biden’s inauguration, the Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly checked into some of the allegations, and Barr told the Associated Press that the DOJ had not seen anything that would have changed the outcome of the election. While that statement may have been true, Barr also said that most of the fraud investigations were taking place at the state level and not something the DOJ was involved in.

Trump’s comments about Barr not investigating Hunter Biden are not entirely true, although he may have been complaining that a more aggressive and public approach was not taken. In June, Barr disputed Maryland Democrat Representative Jamie Raskin’s claim that Trump’s Justice Department closed an investigation that was looking into Joe Biden’s involvement in a $5 million bribery scheme while he was vice president. Barr said that the opposite was true and that he forwarded the evidence to U.S. Attorney David Weiss. Weiss’ investigation into Hunter Biden and others began in 2019 and is still ongoing. On August 11, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he had named Weiss as Special Counsel, but the DOJ would not confirm or deny if President Biden was also being investigated.
