Russian Navy’s Arrival in South Asia Is Alarming

(LibertySociety.com) – While the world has been focused on the conflict in Israel and Gaza following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, Russia has been strengthening alliances in Asia. On November 12, two Russian anti-submarine warfare ships and a tanker arrived on the Bay of Bengal at Chattogram, Bangladesh.

The historic deployment was applauded by the Russian Embassy in Dhaka, as it was the first trip to the Asian country in over 50 years. The account “Jay in Kyiv” posted about the visit on X, formerly Twitter, claiming that the actions showed how President Vladimir Putin was planning to take over the globe. He said that the United States was too distracted with domestic issues and Russian disinformation to focus on Putin’s real actions.

Russia is also building a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, delivering its first shipment of uranium back in October. Once the construction is completed, Bangladesh will likely experience economic growth and operate an enhanced electrical grid. Russia loaned the money to Bangladesh with a 20-year repayment period. The plant will provide electricity to 15 million households and will account for nearly 10 percent of the country’s energy consumption. President Putin said at the time that the partnership would help build “the entire atomic industry.”

Russia’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy provided a comment to Russia’s state media about the significance of the relationship between the two countries. He recalled how Soviet navy sailors prevented a “humanitarian catastrophe” for Bangladesh two different times by clearing mines in the waters near ports in 1972 and 1974 once the country was free from Pakistani control. Bangladesh has shown support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has likely strengthened the bond.

Russia has also strengthened ties with Myanmar and participated in a joint naval and air exercise in the Andaman Sea before arriving at the port in Chattogram. Myanmar has been under military control since a coup took place following a suspected fraudulent election in February 2021.
