North Carolina Lawmaker Announces Party Switch

Democrat State Representative Leaves Party To Join GOP

(LibertySociety.com) – A Democratic lawmaker has decided to switch parties in the state legislature of North Carolina. Representative Tricia Cotham announced at a press conference that she would be switching parties, stating that the “modern-day Democratic Party has become unrecognizable to me” and that she will not allow anyone to control her. Rep. Cotham said that the final straw for her was when she was criticized by Democrats on Twitter for using an American flag emoji in her posts.

Now the Republicans in the state will have a veto-proof majority. North Carolina Democrats have stated that they believe Rep. Cotham should resign from her seat, as she was elected as a Democrat. However, the North Carolina Republicans were eager to welcome her to the party, excited to be able to get more done without having the approval of Governor Roy Cooper.

U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., previously worked with Rep. Cotham and was glad to see her make the switch to the GOP. Michael Whatley, who is the chair of the state GOP, expressed his belief in a statement that the “Democratic Party is too radical for North Carolina,” adding that the voters align with the values of the Republican Party. They are excited to get to work for the people of North Carolina, finally able to address things like education reform.

Several Democrats have decided to switch parties over the last few years, with most claiming that the Democrat Party left them. U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced that she was switching to an Independent in December 2022, believing that she does not belong in either party, but looks to work in a bipartisan manner to get more things done for the American people. West Virginia U.S. Senator Joe Manchin has not switched parties, but he is known for pushing back against some of the Democrats’ plans and trying to find middle ground between the two major parties.
