MTG Wants to Trade Gov Funding for Impeachment Inquiry

(LibertySociety.com) – Congress returned to Washington D.C. on September 5 to begin working on a continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a government shutdown. The CR will give lawmakers more time to debate and revise the upcoming budget, but a growing number of Republicans are opposing the measure. The House Freedom Caucus has published a list of demands that must be included before they will vote for a CR. The caucus is looking to put an end to the pandemic-level spending that has become commonplace since 2020 but also wants to force the Biden administration to abide by the Constitution.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is going further with her demands, announcing that she will not vote for a CR unless an official impeachment inquiry is opened into President Biden. During a town hall event in Floyd County, Georgia, Greene received a round of applause upon announcing her position. She gave additional reasons why she would not vote for a CR, stating, “I will not fund the government because I will not fund the weaponized part of the government.” She said that she refuses to fund Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Trump, adding that the special counsel investigating Hunter Biden should also be fired. She blasted the weaponization of the FBI, telling the audience that Congress needs to rein the agency in.

Greene also said that she would not vote for a CR that allocates money for mask or vaccine mandates, or anything else related to the pandemic. She reiterated her opposition to voting for a CR that funds the war in Ukraine, stating that she has drawn “a red line in the sand.” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates blasted Greene’s impeachment inquiry threat, noting that it would be shameful if Republicans did not uphold their promise to keep the government funded. However, getting a CR passed with full support from his party will likely be an uphill battle for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as President Biden has already requested $40 billion in new aid for Ukraine to be included in the CR.
