DHS Secretary Mayorkas Pays Visit To the Southern Border

DHS Secretary Mayorkas Visits the Southern Border

(LibertySociety.com) – Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas paid a visit to the southern border on May 4th, 2023, just a week before the end of Title 42. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents are preparing for a massive influx of migrants, as over 40,000 are waiting across the border from El Paso, Texas. Secretary Mayorkas visited the Rio Grande Valley area, spoke with border officials, and on May 5 spoke at a press conference in Brownsville on immigration matters.

Secretary Mayorkas has faced increased scrutiny from Republicans over the last several months regarding his willingness to enforce the laws regarding illegal migration. Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is one of many lawmakers who believe Secretary Mayorkas should resign but have recently stated that they could force a vote of no confidence in the Senate to give the green light to the House to start the impeachment process. According to Fox News, Independent Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema recently stated that “actually enforcing the laws that are on the books” would be a good start to tackling the crisis.

In an interview with NBC, Secretary Mayorkas stated, “I’m not worried about Title 42 lifting. We recognize the challenge at the border.” This raised eyebrows among Republicans who have highlighted the record number of illegal crossings and got-a-ways over the last several months. In the last nine days of the month of April, over 73,000 people were encountered at the border, according to a report from The Washington Examiner. The Biden administration recently requested 1,500 active-duty troops to deploy to the southern border to offer administrative support to CBP after Title 42 is lifted, with over 2,700 National Guardsmen already in place.
