(LibertySociety.com) – Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador slammed the idea of indicting former President Donald Trump during a press conference on March 21st, 2023. Referencing tactics that were allegedly used against him when he was seeking political office, he stated that he “suffered from the fabrication of a crime,” adding that the only reason Trump would be arrested is to prevent him from running for re-election. He went on to claim that the potential indictment was anti-democratic, stating “Why not let the people decide?”
President López Obrador has always gotten along with Trump, although they do not agree on a lot of things politically. He has been known to come to Trump’s defense in the past, however, as he did when the former president was silenced in the social media world after Facebook and other social media platforms banned his accounts following the events surrounding January 6th, 2021. He expressed his disagreement with the decision, suggesting social media platforms were taking a divine gatekeeper approach to speech. His spokesperson later called for a debate about the power that social media networks hold when deciding to silence free speech.
The grand jury for the investigation of former President Trump surrounding his alleged intent to violate campaign finance rules was scheduled to hear from another witness on Wednesday March 22, 2023, but the meeting was unexpectedly canceled by the district attorney. Disgraced former lawyer Michael Cohen testified before the grand jury in mid-March 2023, with sources saying he is the main witness in the investigation. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have weighed in on the potential arrest of the former president, with Republicans labeling it as a political persecution, while many Democrats are more supportive of his potential indictment. Some Democrats are concerned about this particular investigation, hoping former President Trump will be indicted for other crimes he allegedly committed instead. If he is ultimately charged by the Manhattan DA, he will have to travel to New York to be arraigned.
