Trump Refuses To Back RNC Candidate

Trump Refuses To Endorse RNC Candidate

(LibertySociety.com) – After former President Donald Trump claimed his seat in the White House in 2016, he chose Ronna McDaniel to head up the Republican National Committee (RNC) after taking office the following year. The chair went on to win two more elections in 2019 and 2021 to retain her position but is now facing a challenger — National Committeewoman Harmeet Dhillon.

On January 16, Trump joined host David Brody on “The Water Cooler with David Brody” to talk about the upcoming RNC chair race. When asked whom the former president might endorse, he declined to pick either candidate. The previous US leader said he “like[d] them both” for the job and they should “fight it out” amongst themselves.

The former commander-in-chief has personal connections with both candidates. As for McDaniel, Trump hand-picked her for the job, and Dhillon serves as one of his trusted attorneys. However, when asked by whether her relationship with the former president with affect the way she runs the RNC, Dhillon said she didn’t think “anybody [could] doubt my integrity.”

Although Dhillon said she doesn’t have any issues with the current chair, she believes the presidential loss in 2020, coupled with the less-than-stellar Republican performance during the midterm election cycle in 2022, calls for a change in leadership. The attorney doesn’t seem to be alone in her thoughts, either.

A poll conducted by Trafalgar Group in December showed over 73% of GOP members polled said they thought it was time for another member of the party to take the helm. Dhillon wants to bring a new perspective to the chair and lead the group in a “fresh direction,” Fox News reported.

Meanwhile, McDaniel recently told Fox News Digital in a different interview that she has the votes needed to keep her position. In fact, she said her backing was “pretty solid.” During the interview, she defended her record as the leader and pointed out all the changes that happened under her direction.

The election will take place on January 27, 2023.
