(LibertySociety.com) – To say that President Trump’s campaign for re-election is unique would be the understatement of the year, but some strategists have attempted to provide a breakdown of just how unprecedented the primary election cycle will be. Polling analyst Kyle Kondik pointed out that voters view the 45th President “as at least a quasi-incumbent,” adding that the candidate pool is similar in size to what it was in 2016. Kondik also discussed how the indictments of former President Trump have not affected his polling numbers negatively or caused any of his GOP supporters to withdraw their support of him.
Jon McHenry, who is a strategist for the GOP, has another reason as to why this primary election will be like no others, stating that former President Trump has “reshaped the party from a conservative party to a populist party.” Many self-described populists have been elected to Congress since 2016, with all of them committing to the America First movement. Several establishment Republicans remain, but one by one, they are retiring or being replaced. The Daily Caller contrasted this primary election to those of the past, where the contenders were all running closely together in the polls, with the eventual nominee only ever taking a slight lead over the rest of the candidates.
Former President Trump has retained a commanding lead over every other candidate, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis being the only candidate polling higher than single digits. Another historic factor in this election is how well former President Trump is performing against President Biden, given his legal woes. Since there is nothing to compare his situation to, pollsters certainly have their work cut out for them. The chaotic state of the country since President Biden took office in comparison to how things were under former President Trump is boding well for his chance at making President Biden a one-term president, according to one pollster. While Trump will likely be the Republican nominee without too much infighting since he is miles ahead of the other candidates, in typical Trump fashion, he will most certainly be making history.
