DeSantis Comes to Trump’s Defense Over J6 Probe

(LibertySociety.com) – Primary opponents of former President Trump are speaking out against the latest news that he will likely be indicted for his role in the events on January 6, 2021, although it is still unclear what type of charges the Washington D.C. grand jury will be handing down. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is the only presidential challenger to Trump that is polling above single digits, expressed concerns about Trump’s choice of actions on that day during a campaign speech in South Carolina, but also stated that “to try to criminalize that, that’s a different issue entirely.”

Governor DeSantis reiterated his comments on July 17 during an interview on CNN, telling Jake Tapper that “criminalizing political differences” is not right. He spoke about the charges from the Manhattan district attorney and how most people see that they are politically motivated, adding that no one besides former President Trump would have been indicted for something like that. DeSantis also brought up the FBI Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which he says is a perfect example of the weaponization of the federal government to bring down people they disagree with politically.

Former Vice President Mike Pence also expressed his disapproval of former President Trump being criminally charged for anything that happened on January 6, 2021, during an interview with News Nation on July 18. Pence thinks that the American people should be the judge of whether Trump is responsible for what happened that day.

Another presidential candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, believes that the reason January 6, 2021, occurred is that the government and social media sites were censoring Americans, preventing them from questioning the results of the election. He said that people do not like being told what they can and cannot discuss, which fomented a lot of anger that day. Special Counsel Jack Smith notified former President Trump on July 16 that he is the target of a Washington D.C. grand jury investigation, which likely means that he will be indicted yet again.
