(LibertySociety.com) – Former President Trump has remained a prominent figure within the Republican Party since President Joe Biden’s inauguration. At least one recent poll suggests he is continuing to expand his lead over the other official and potential candidates in the race. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has not officially announced that he will be running for the oval office, is the only name in the game with greater than single-digit support in virtually every single poll conducted. He is not expected to announce his candidacy until the current legislative session is over, but his travel schedule includes several states that will hold the earliest primary elections in the 2024 cycle.
DeSantis has attracted some criticism from Trump recently, with the latter calling him out for being aligned with people like Paul Ryan, former Speaker of the House during the beginning of the Trump administration, in addition to political operatives like Karl Rove. The latest poll from Monmouth University survey shows Trump taking a significant lead, gaining 41 percent support among participants. DeSantis follows at 27 percent. This contrasts with Monmouth’s survey from February, which showed DeSantis and Trump in a tie when pitted against each other and other likely candidates.
Trump and his campaign team have used Truth Social posts and campaign emails to highlight the results of several polls. Meanwhile, Governor Ron DeSantis and his team have largely refrained from heavily criticizing the former President. However, Governor DeSantis did criticize the rumors surrounding the potential arrest of former President Trump, labeling the whole ordeal as a “manufactured circus,” adding a slight jab when he stated “I don’t know what goes into paying hush money,” when referencing the payment made to Stormy Daniels in 2016 for silence about an alleged affair between the two. Former President Trump maintains that he never had relations with Daniels.
