(LibertySociety.com) – Following the chaotic scene in El Paso, Texas, where a group of around 100 illegal migrants bum-rushed members of the state’s National Guard to cross into the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the increase of patrols in the area. A spokesperson for the agency said that the migrants were relocated from the site where the razor wire had been cut and that extra personnel had been sent to keep the area secure.
The spokesperson said that “CBP continues to enforce United States immigration laws” and that anyone who has no legal right to stay in the country would be set for removal and barred from applying for admission for five years. The spokesperson encouraged potential border crossers not to “believe the lies of smugglers.” The National Border Patrol Council president Brandon Judd said that CBP was combing through the video of the incident to find the illegal migrants who assaulted the guardsmen. He noted that they would be processed through the system for deportation but would still be able to submit asylum claims. Texas also has the authority to charge the illegal migrants with assault.
Texas has taken matters into its own hands over the last several years to decrease the number of illegal migrants flowing into the state. Some of the actions have resulted in legal battles with the Biden administration, but Texas Governor Greg Abbott has not backed down from his authority to protect the state from invasion when the federal government is derelict in its duties. The Supreme Court recently ruled that Texas could enforce its new state law, kicking the case back to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The law allows the state to arrest illegal migrants, but it was swiftly blocked upon return to the lower court.
The Biden administration claimed that the law would decrease safety for residents, place a burden on law enforcement, and cause disorder at the border. Abbott said that he would continue his mission and that the Texas Department of Public Safety would be arresting every illegal migrant who crosses into the state illegally.
