(LibertySociety.com) – A prankster has been arrested in Mesa, Arizona, after allegedly spraying bug killer on food items in a Walmart as part of a social media stunt. Charles Smith, 27, now faces charges of felony poisoning, misdemeanor criminal damage, and additional charges of endangerment and theft. The Mesa Police Department confirmed the arrest in a statement.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 19. According to police, Smith entered the Walmart around 8:30 p.m. with the intent to film a “prank” for social media. He allegedly took a can of bug killer from the store without paying for it and proceeded to spray it on fresh produce and prepared food, including rotisserie chickens. Police said Smith recorded himself during the act, capturing his face, the can of pesticide, and the food being sprayed. He later uploaded the video online.
Smith turned himself in voluntarily following an investigation aided by the Tempe Police Department. Detectives identified him as the suspect, and during questioning, he admitted to stealing the pesticide and contaminating the food.
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the crime, condemning what they described as “reckless actions disguised as social media pranks.”
“This arrest was made possible through the tireless work of our officers and detectives,” the Mesa Police Department said. “We also extend our gratitude to the Tempe Police Department for their collaboration in resolving this case quickly.”
Walmart confirmed that all contaminated items were immediately removed from the shelves and that the affected area was thoroughly sanitized. In a statement, the company assured customers that their safety is a top priority and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
No injuries or illnesses were reported following the incident, but authorities underscored the potential dangers of such behavior and urged individuals to think twice before engaging in stunts that could harm the public.
