(LibertySociety.com) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz found himself the target of online criticism after making an unclear comment during a rally. While speaking in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Walz said, “We can’t afford four more years of this,” which led some conservative voices to mock him on social media. Many interpreted his remark as an unintended criticism of the Biden administration, despite Walz being part of the Democratic ticket.
Walz, the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, was discussing gun violence at the rally when he got distracted by a member of the crowd who seemed to need water. Pausing his speech, he called for someone to check on the individual before returning to his message. He spoke about measures taken in Minnesota, like enhanced background checks and red flag laws, that aim to reduce gun violence.
However, it was the later part of his speech that got the most attention. While criticizing former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, Walz said, “We can’t afford four more years of this.” Though it seemed likely he was referring to issues like gun violence or Trump’s influence, the vague wording sparked a wave of jokes from Trump supporters and conservative commentators.
One social media user, Rita Panahi, sarcastically asked if Walz was now campaigning for Trump. Donald Trump Jr. joined in, jokingly replying, “I’m with Him/Tim.” Even the Trump campaign’s official account got involved, sharing Walz’s quote with the caption, “WALZ FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTH: ‘We can’t afford four more years’ of Kamala Harris.”
The ambiguous comment quickly spread, with many seizing the opportunity to criticize Walz for what they saw as a poorly phrased remark. Although Walz likely intended to focus on Trump’s policies, his choice of words left room for interpretation, giving his opponents an opening to poke fun. As of now, there has been no official clarification from Walz or the Harris campaign regarding the comment.
