(LibertySociety.com) – Illegal migration normally increases during the summer months, but in recent years, there’s been an increasing amount of scrutiny placed on immigration policy due to the border crisis under the Biden Administration. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken action at the state level to assist Customs & Border Protection (CBP) in their efforts to detain migrants and stop the flow of fentanyl into the country. Operation Lone Star recently received assistance from four other states, with some sending National Guardsmen and others sending law enforcement officers.
Now Governor Glenn Youngkin revealed he would be sending National Guard troops following an update from Governor Abbott on the situation in Texas, with Youngkin releasing a statement calling out the federal government for failing to properly address the crisis. He said in a statement that “states are answering the call to secure our southern border,” mentioning the flow of drugs into the United States and humanitarian concerns, as well as the tragic trafficking of adults and children by cartels. Back in April 2023, Republican Senators demanded an investigation into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services (HHS) for reportedly failing to keep track of over 85,000 children who came into the country unaccompanied.
According to a Fox News report, an official from DHS recently told the media that he believes Governors Abbott and DeSantis have taken “actions that are being done really for purely political reasons,” although he applauded the efforts that state and local governments have made to work in sync with the federal government. The official also encouraged further coordination, advising that federal agencies be informed of state and local decisions. However, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been in the hot seat over the last several months for his agency’s perceived lack of transparency. Governor Abbott has not backed off from criticizing the Biden administration for what he argues is an abdication of its duties to secure the southern border. He tweeted his appreciation to the Governors of the various states who have sent support to the state of Texas.
