US Set To Discuss Nukes With Russia
(LibertySociety.com) – Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the United States and other countries have imposed varying levels of sanctions against the aggressor. In fact, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov recently said the relationship between the US and Russia “remain[s] bad.”
Regardless, Ned Price from the State Department announced on November 8 the Bilateral Consultative Commission (BCC) will meet with Russia to talk about nuclear weapons. The confidential discussions are to happen under the New START Treaty, which places limits on certain deployed nuclear arms.

According to Bloomberg, people in Russia familiar with the impending talks said the meeting will probably happen in Cairo, Egypt, considering Switzerland joined the countries sanctioning the Kremlin. The last BCC meeting was in late October 2021.
The US has not been allowed in Russia to inspect nuclear weapons since August due to travel restrictions imposed by each country. On-site inspections for both nations have been on hold since the beginning of the pandemic.
Moscow and the US agreed to extend the New START treaty another five years in 2021, well before the country started the war in Ukraine. With Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent veiled threats to use nuclear weapons, the timing of the meeting seems to be on point.
As of now, there is no set date for discussions, only that it will happen “in the near future.”
