(LibertySociety.com) – The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania last weekend may have failed, but even though the former president survived the attack, a former fire chief died during the incident and two more were injured.
On Saturday, July 13, Trump was an inch from death as bullets grazed past him, one striking his ear, but a rally attendee sitting behind him was not as fortunate. Fifty-year-old Corey Comperatore attended the Butler County rally to see Trump speak and died as that speech was interrupted by gunfire.
According to reports from eyewitnesses and his family, Comperatore died shielding his wife and daughter from bullets. His daughter Allyson said he threw them to the ground as soon as the first shots rang out. The assassin, later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to fire eight rounds before a Secret Service sniper killed him.
Dawn Comperatore Schafer, the victim’s sister, said her brother died protecting his family and described him as a “hero.” She said his wife and daughters are now living through “the unthinkable and unimaginable” in the aftermath of Comperatore’s death. Dawn said it was “the hatred for one man” (referring to the former president) that resulted in the loss of her brother’s life, a man she said they “loved the most.”
In a message mourning her father, Allyson described Comperatore as “the best dad a girl could ask for” and someone who would go out of his way to help his family no matter what. She said her father “truly loved” them, “enough to take a real bullet.”
Comperatore’s identity as the victim was confirmed the following day by Pennsylvania Gov. Kosh Shapiro, who called him a “hero” for protecting his family. Two other attendees suffered severe wounds during the attack and were admitted to a nearby hospital in Pittsburgh where they are recovering.
Several questions remain about Crooks, who was killed by a Secret Service sniper, and how he was able to access a nearby building from which he fired while on the roof.
