(LibertySociety.com) – Former President Donald Trump may have survived an attempted assassination, but one of his supporters did not make it through the ordeal, and Trump paid tribute to him at the Republican National Convention (RNC).
Fifty-year-old Corey Comperatore is the only person who died during the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday, July 13, in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Two other attendees were also injured. According to his daughter and his widow, the retired fire chief died trying to protect them from the gunfire and threw them to the ground before he was fatally struck by one of the bullets.
On the third day of the convention, Trump paid tribute to Comperatore by displaying the former fire chief’s uniform and helmet on stage. The former president hugged the uniform at one point and kissed Comperatore’s helmet. Trump said Comperatore was “highly respected” in the fire department and “by everybody.”
During his remarks, Trump also mentioned the deceased fire chief’s wife, Helen Comperatore, who he called “an incredible woman” and said he spoke with her that same day, as well as Comperatore’s two daughters. One of his daughters, Allyson, told reporters after the shooting earlier this month that her father died protecting them, describing him as “the best dad a girl could ask for.”
Trump recounted that story, stating that Comperatore “lost his life” while “acting as a human shield to protect” his family from the flying bullet. The former president called Comperatore a “fine man” and then walked across the stage to hug his uniform and kiss his helmet.
Critics of Trump pointed out that Comperatore’s last name was misspelled on the uniform as “Compertore,” accusing the former president of failing to make sure it was spelled correctly. Commenters replied to the criticism by pointing out that Comperatore’s former department delivered the uniform personally, and that the fire chief’s name was always misspelled on it, which Comperatore reportedly found humorous and never bothered to have it changed. His department confirmed this.
