Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as his nominee for Attorney General, a decision that underscores his commitment to reforming the Department of Justice (DOJ). Gaetz, a fervent Trump ally and vocal critic of the Biden administration, is known for his staunch defense of Trump and his sharp attacks on what he terms the “weaponization” of the DOJ.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz, of Florida, is hereby nominated to be The Attorney General of the United States,” Trump declared on Truth Social. He praised Gaetz as a “deeply gifted and tenacious attorney”, adding that the congressman’s work on the House Judiciary Committee demonstrated his readiness to take on this role. Trump highlighted Gaetz’s focus on addressing systemic issues within the DOJ, emphasizing his leadership in challenging narratives from the Trump-Russia investigation and scrutinizing DOJ practices.
In his post, Trump outlined Gaetz’s mission as Attorney General: “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations, and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.” Gaetz responded to the announcement with enthusiasm, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!”
However, Gaetz’s nomination is expected to face significant hurdles in the Senate, where Democrats are unified in opposition. Securing confirmation will require support from moderate Republicans, some of whom have expressed reservations. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) remarked, “We’re not going to get a single Democrat,” acknowledging the challenges Gaetz may encounter during the confirmation process.
Despite these obstacles, Trump is confident in Gaetz’s ability to lead the DOJ, emphasizing his mandate to restore public trust and root out corruption. In a follow-up statement, Trump asserted, “Matt will return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution. Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again.”
