(LibertySociety.com) – The 2024 Republican Presidential Primary is filling up with former and current (one) state governors hoping to secure the win, and another just threw his hat in. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who served two terms in the state, is once again challenging former President Trump in the primaries. In 2016, Christie dropped out of the race in February 2016 after disastrous results in New Hampshire. Christie made his announcement during a New Hampshire town hall event on June 6th, 2023, asking voters to give him a chance to show them who he is. He also focused on what he believes were failures of the Obama and Trump administrations, firing the first shot at former President Trump by calling him “Voldemort,” from Harry Potter.
The 45th President wasted no time critiquing Christie’s speech, while some believe he was making insinuations about the former New Jersey Governor’s weight as he noted the number of times Christie said the word “small” when criticizing the division he believes was created by the previous two administrations. In a Truth Social post, former President Trump asked his followers, “Does he have a psychological problem with size?” adding his opinion about the substance of his speech. He also noted Christie’s previous candidacy, predicting that the result will be the same for him in 2024.
Governor Christie joins former governors Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, in addition to Florida’s current Governor Ron DeSantis. All candidates, excluding Governor DeSantis, are polling in the single digits, with DeSantis in the teens, still trailing former President Trump by a wide margin. DeSantis supporters were hoping for a surge in polling after his announcement, but so far there is no measurable gain. Candidates will likely use former President Trump’s legal woes against him as they travel across the country campaigning, but his popularity only increased after charges were brought against him in New York. The former President has just recently been charged over his handling of government documents.
