Trump Faces Online Criticism for Opposing DeSantis’ Abortion Ban

(LibertySociety.com) – Abortion has been a hot-button issue for decades in the United States, but the overturning of Roe v. Wade has changed the conversation. Democrats are looking to pass legislation that would guarantee the right to an abortion nationwide, although the Supreme Court ruling shifted the power to regulate abortion back to the states. Some Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, have called for a 15-week federal ban. Former President Trump has repeatedly said that pro-life advocates now have the upper hand to negotiate abortion regulation on a state-by-state basis. He has also voiced support for the exceptions, which include rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

Trump has always claimed to be the most pro-life president in the history of the United States, but his recent comments during a Meet the Press interview on MSNBC prompted backlash. Trump would not say if he would sign a 15-week ban into law, although he acknowledged that it seemed to have the most support. He said he thinks “both sides are going to like me” and that he would sit down to negotiate an appropriate limit on abortion that would result in “peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.” Backlash ensued after he began discussing Florida Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis’s 6-week abortion ban, claiming that it was a mistake to pass something so restrictive.

Pro-life supporters of the former President expressed their disappointment with his comment. Podcast host Liz Wheeler recommended that Trump fire the adviser who suggested he adopt a lax stance on abortion. She said that pro-abortion activists will not vote for him even if he is willing to compromise. Students for Life sent a letter to Trump, asking him to clarify his comments during the MSNBC interview. In multiple Truth Social posts, Trump touted his success in appointing three Supreme Court justices, which made the overturning of Roe v. Wade a reality. He reiterated his belief that pro-life advocates hold the power when negotiating limits on abortion and encouraged Republicans to figure out how to talk about the subject.
