Trump Expected to Win Over Black Voters, Says Lorenzo Sewell

(LibertySociety.com) – Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who last month spoke at the Republican National Convention, suggested last week that he thought more black men might support Donald Trump as president this time around.

In an interview with WXYZ in Detroit, Sewell, who in June hosted a round table discussion with the Republican nominee, said he believed that black men were coming around to Trump because they knew that something needed to change.

Sewell previously said he was staying neutral in the 2024 presidential race but conceded that there had been a shift among black voters in recent years, especially among black men.

He told WXYZ that the black communities that have been under the leadership of Democrats for years were “hurting,” especially in Michigan cities like Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and Pontiac.

Sewell clarified that he did not believe that Democrat officials spent the past 60 years “doing the wrong thing,” but suggested that Republicans were open to having a conversation with the black community.

However, Democrat consultant Mario Morrow told WXYZ that Sewell’s assessment was incorrect.

Morrow said that among black men, very few were supporting Donald Trump in the election. He said many black voters who were undecided when Joe Biden was the nominee have now “shifted” their support to the Democrats “because they have a viable candidate” in Vice President Kamala Harris.

Morrow told WXYZ that while there are some black Republicans, their numbers are not large enough to have an impact on the November election.

Noting the recent fundraiser geared toward black voters that raked in millions to support Kamala Harris, Morrow said that there was a “full court press,” especially among black voters to help the vice president win in November.

Pastor Sewell admitted that it would be “amazing” for the country to have the first black woman president but told WXYZ that identity politics needed to stop. He said he rejected calls to vote for Kamala Harris simply because she was black, explaining that such a pitch did not “resonate” with him.
