Trump Calls for Nationwide Concealed Carry Reciprocity

(LibertySociety.com) – Over the weekend, President-elect Donald Trump announced a push to make concealed carry permits valid across all 50 states, an idea known as “national concealed carry reciprocity.” This move would allow someone with a concealed carry permit in one state to legally carry a concealed firearm in any other state.

Don Trump Jr. showed his support on Instagram, saying, “Boom! My father just announced concealed carry reciprocity. The Second Amendment will stay and remain protected.” His post echoed Trump’s message that national reciprocity is about defending Americans’ rights to self-defense, no matter where they live or travel in the country.

Texas Gun Rights quickly shared Trump’s announcement on social media, highlighting the excitement around the issue. The concept isn’t new for Trump, though. Back in September 2015, only a few months into his first presidential campaign, he laid out his stance on the issue in a policy paper published by Breitbart News. Trump argued, “The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway. That’s why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.”

Trump also supported national reciprocity during his 2020 presidential campaign. In an interview with the NRA’s magazine, First Freedom, he was asked if he’d back a national reciprocity act so that law-abiding gun owners could carry their firearms legally in any state. Trump responded clearly: “Yes.”

Now, President-elect Trump is signaling that this issue will once again be a priority for his administration. Many of his supporters and gun rights advocates see it as a critical step in protecting the Second Amendment across the country. National reciprocity would make it easier for law-abiding gun owners to travel between states without risking legal trouble, something Trump believes is overdue.
