(LibertySociety.com) – In the wake of disgraced ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), New York has a new problem in its governmental system, as another top Democratic official faces criminal charges. This week, federal officials arrested the now-resigned Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin (D-NY) for fraud, conspiracy, falsifying records, and bribery.
Soon after his arrest, Benjamin resigned his position as the case continues to unfold. Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY), who selected the lieutenant, accepted his resignation, “effective immediately.” Still, she recently defended him before his arrest, when rumors of possible charges surfaced.

The federal indictment says Benjamin worked with a real estate developer, allegedly promising to use his position to help them obtain a state grant in exchange for a campaign contribution in his bid to become a state senator. Prosecutors stated a group of people attempted to cover up the incident for two years, falsifying donor forms, and giving false information so there would be no stain on Benjamin when Hochul offered him the position as Lieutenant Governor.
Benjamin promptly pleaded not guilty and made a $250,000 bail following a court appearance in Manhattan.
Hochul is up for re-election in November, and there’s no telling what kind of impact this will have on her chances to win another term.
