(LibertySociety.com) – Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker took aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his criticism of a new Illinois law that will allow non-citizens who are authorized to work in the United States to apply to be police officers. Pritzker went after DeSantis in a post on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “This man isn’t smart enough to be president.” Pritzker claimed that the military already allows non-American citizens, including DACA recipients, to serve. He stated that he was proud to sign the bill, adding that he was right to do it, “no matter what lies the right-wing spreads.”
DeSantis had launched his criticism of the Illinois Law in an X post, expressing his disappointment with Pritzker and Illinois Democrats for allowing non-citizens to be able to enforce laws on American citizens. He claimed that the left does not care about what it means to be a citizen of the United States, and vowed to focus on the sovereignty of America if he wins the presidency. DeSantis signed a controversial immigration bill in May that prompted activists and illegal migrants to hold a large protest and stage a state-wide walkout.
United States Representative Mary Miller, R-Ill., also blasted Governor Pritzker for signing the law, which will go into effect in January 2024. Miller questioned state lawmakers’ sanity for thinking it is a good idea to allow illegal immigrants to arrest American citizens. The legislation notably faced strong opposition from the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Union as it was being debated in the state house. Illinois Republican state senator Chapin Rose also criticized the bill before it landed on Pritzker’s desk, as he believes that allowing illegals to become police is damaging to democracy. Pritzker has adopted various progressive policies over the last several years, including making Illinois the first state to completely abolish cash bail. He defended that decision, claiming that people should only be held in jail if they are dangerous.
