Texas Governor Suggests New Changes to Deal With Border Crisis

(LibertySociety.com) – Recently, the Biden administration announced its intentions to end Title 42 practices which had allowed for the swift expulsion of migrants at the southern border. In response to the move, Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) declared he would place the influx of undocumented migrants on a bus and ship them to Washington, DC, so the president could deal with the aftermath of his decision.

The Governor’s Press Conference

During his press conference on April 6, the Texas leader expressed his concerns about eliminating Title 42 and the impact it would likely have on his state. He accused the Biden administration of fostering a dangerous open-border policy leading to deadly cartels and drugs entering the country at a high rate. Abbott said eliminating Title 42 will only make an already bad situation worse, and he’s preparing to take action to secure the border.

The governor stated the Department of Homeland Security had no plan in place to deal with the upcoming surge of illegal entrants likely to cross into the United States. He alleges its only plan is to release them into Texas towns but said the strategy is unacceptable. In addition to sending migrants to DC, Abbott also told the Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Colonel Steven McCraw, to increase checks for every vehicle crossing all points on the border. The governor’s plans include blocking boats, placing razor wire at entry points, and deploying the Texas National Guard in riot gear to keep things under control.

The Lift of Title 42

Former President Donald Trump implemented Title 42 at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020 as a health measure to mitigate the spread of the virus, allowing for quick expulsions at the border to keep Americans safe. While President Joe Biden kept the measure for a time, his administration announced the end of the practice in March to allow unaccompanied minors to avoid it. Now that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas intends to lift the practice for all ages, it poses a particular problem for those in southwestern states.

Even the federal government admits there will likely be a surge in migration once Title 42 is no longer an option to return people across the US border.

In concert with the DHS, the CDC announced Title 42, as it pertains to the US/Mexican border, will no longer be in effect as of May 23 of this year. Three states are suing to keep the policy in force, and a bipartisan group of Senators is introducing legislation seeking to maintain the policy.
