Texas Continues Installing Razor Wire Despite Court Ruling

(LibertySociety.com) – Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott is not backing down on his effort to prevent illegal migrants from crossing into the state at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. The park had become a haven for illegal migrants after crossing the Rio Grande into the state. In early January, Abbott ordered the installation of razor wire and fencing around the park. He stationed Texas National Guard units outside the fence to prevent illegal migrants and the federal government from gaining access to the area. However, a January 22 ruling from the Supreme Court allowed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to cut through the razor wire to gain access to the park if necessary.

Governor Abbott responded to the ruling by ordering the installation of more razor wire. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he wrote that the policies of the Biden administration were fueling the illegal border crossings, and that the state would continue its efforts to deter illegal migration.” NewsNation’s Jorge Ventura confirmed the installation of the new razor wire on January 23 with footage posted on X. He said that CBP had not attempted to cut through the fencing, but that many migrants were unable to come into the state due to the barrier.

Abbott went a step further on January 24, releasing a statement that accused the federal government of failing to adhere to the agreement between the United States and individual states. He blasted President Biden for not heeding his calls to secure the border. He invoked the founding fathers’ intentions when they wrote the U.S. Constitution, noting that they “foresaw that States should not be left to the mercy of a lawless president.” He wrote that the Biden administration failed to abide by Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution, which triggered Article I, Section 10, Clause 3. Abbott said that it “is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.” Over 250,000 court notices were issued to illegal border crossers in December, CBP encounters for the month totaled more than 300,000.
