(LibertySociety.com) – Taylor Lorenz, a polarizing journalist and former Washington Post reporter, is leaving Vox Media at the end of the year, according to a report from Semafor. The announcement comes just days after Lorenz sparked outrage for comments that appeared to celebrate the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Her remarks, made on social media, quickly drew widespread condemnation from critics across the political spectrum.
Earlier this year, Vox partnered with Lorenz to distribute her Power User podcast and YouTube series, a deal hailed by outlets like Axios as a significant win for the media company. However, her content struggled to gain traction, with most YouTube episodes drawing fewer than 5,000 views. Despite low engagement, Lorenz remained confident in Vox Media as the ideal platform to amplify her work.
Despite this lukewarm reception, Lorenz had confidently touted Vox as the perfect platform to support her ambitions. “Vox Media has a robust infrastructure in place to support my show,” she told Axios at the time, seemingly framing the partnership as her choice rather than Vox’s.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn after Lorenz’s comments on social media about Thompson’s death ignited backlash. Using her Bluesky account, Lorenz shared what many interpreted as an endorsement of public outrage and violence against healthcare executives. After the fallout, she attempted to clarify her remarks, stating, “Let me be super clear: my post uses a collective ‘we’ and is explaining the public sentiment. It is not me personally saying ‘I want these executives dead.’”
The damage was done, and critics accused her of gaslighting rather than apologizing. Observers also pointed out the irony of Lorenz defending her remarks while discussing the failures of the American healthcare system, given that the Affordable Care Act, championed by Democrats, was supposed to resolve such issues.
Reports indicate that the suspect in Thompson’s murder is linked to far-left ideologies, intensifying scrutiny of Lorenz’s comments. Critics have questioned whether her rhetoric contributed to the increasingly hostile political climate. This controversy, combined with her history of polarizing statements, has further overshadowed her journalism career.
While Vox Media has not commented directly on Lorenz’s departure, her exit raises questions about the media outlet’s tolerance for controversial figures. Many argue that if Vox wants to lower the political temperature, it should take a clear stand against celebrating violence or targeting individuals, regardless of political leanings.
For Lorenz, this marks yet another chapter in a career often overshadowed by controversy rather than journalistic achievements. Whether she can rebuild her platform remains uncertain.
