(LibertySociety.com) – An iconic surfer and actor died after he was attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii. Tamayo Perry, 49, was discovered by other surfers in the water after he was bitten at around one p.m. on June 23. One media outlet said the shark bit off one of Perry’s arms and legs in the attack. First responders were notified of the attack after a beachgoer spotted Perry in the water. They immediately began first aid but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
The mayor of Honolulu spoke highly of Tamayo and called his death “a tragic loss.” Everyone on the North Shore knew who he was, but so did the whole world, according to the ocean safety chief in Honolulu. Tamayo began his lifeguarding career in 2016 and also taught surfing classes. He was just 12 years old when he first started riding the waves. In 1999, he took first place in the Pipeline Masters Trials, which is held in Oahu every year. His career took off and he became one of the most popular surfers in the area.
Tamayo showed off his surfing skills in several movies, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Blue Crush, and others. Perry left behind his wife, Emilia Perry, who recently spoke out about the tragedy. During an interview on one media outlet’s morning show, the widow broke down in tears while discussing her husband’s death but said that she knew he was “in a better place.” The couple spent 25 years of their lives together.
Following the attack, ocean safety workers posted warnings throughout the area to spread the word to the public. Just two days later, another man was attacked near the same area. In recent weeks, shark attacks and the presence of marine life have dominated media headlines. Three people were attacked by sharks in the Florida panhandle in early June, with one teenage girl severely injured.
