(LibertySociety.com) – Late-night host Stephen Colbert opened Monday’s episode of The Late Show with a candid—and comedic—confession about how he has been handling the aftermath of President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory. In his signature humorous style, Colbert admitted to stress-eating his way through the weekend as he processed the election results.
“I’ve decided I’m either going to lift weights and get super jacked, or… I’m just going to get super fat,” Colbert joked to his audience. “One of those two, and I’ve got a pretty good clue of where it’s going,” he added. He detailed an elaborate menu of comfort foods he prepared over the weekend, including Tuscan white bean soup, roasted cauliflower in coconut milk, and almond bread pudding. The host lightened the mood further with a segment featuring heartwarming puppy videos, a classic move to steer attention away from political drama.
Colbert’s post-election stress isn’t an isolated reaction. Throughout Trump’s campaign, Colbert frequently used his platform to criticize the president-elect and his supporters, often blending satire with pointed commentary. In an effort to boost Kamala Harris’s appeal in the final stretch of the campaign, Colbert even hosted the then-Democratic candidate for an on-air beer. “Elections, I think, are won on vibes,” he remarked during the October segment. “They just want somebody they can have a beer with. So, would you like to have a beer with me?”. Despite the playful gesture, Harris’s campaign failed to connect with enough voters to secure a victory.
Hollywood at large has also reacted emotionally to Trump’s return to the White House. Fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel appeared visibly shaken on his show, struggling to maintain composure as he addressed the election results. According to reports, Kimmel nearly teared up while discussing the implications of Trump’s win. Meanwhile, rapper Cardi B, a vocal supporter of Harris, vented her frustrations in a now-deleted social media video, blaming Trump voters for natural disasters. “This is why some of y’all states be getting hurricanes,” she said.
As Hollywood and Democratic supporters grapple with Trump’s decisive victory, Colbert’s blend of humor and self-deprecation stands out as a reflection of the ongoing effort to process the outcome. For now, his coping strategy involves plenty of hearty meals—and, possibly, a gym membership.
