Staffer for Senator Rand Paul Attacked in Washington D.C.

(LibertySociety.com) – Republican Kentucky Senator Rand Paul announced on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, that a member of his staff was attacked and stabbed in the head “in broad daylight in Washington, D.C.” The attacker was previously imprisoned for 12 years for forcing two women to work as prostitutes, only released from jail less than 24 hours before lodging the attack against Phillip Todd. This comes after a recent spike in crime in the nation’s capital, in addition to a failed push by the Washington D.C. City Council to lower criminal penalties for certain crimes. Mayor Muriel Bowser previously stated that reducing these penalties would “send the wrong message.”

Phillip Todd is recovering in the hospital but suffered a deep wound, with a risk of possible seizures over the next several weeks, according to a Facebook post by his uncle. His uncle also asked for prayers in his post, adding that he also suffered wounds to his “abdomen, skull, brain, and lungs.” The man who attacked the staffer was arrested and jailed on Sunday, March 26th, 2023, one day after the attack, which occurred a little over a mile from the Capitol. He is being charged by the Metropolitan Police Department with Assault with Intent to Kill.

Senator Paul asked for prayers and privacy for the family of his staffer, expressing his relief that his attacker was arrested. In 2017, Senator Paul himself was attacked outside of his home by a neighbor, which resulted in several broken ribs, including some that were displaced. It took months for him to recover due to lung injury complications. His neighbor was ultimately sentenced to 8 months in prison, 6 months of home confinement, and 100 hours of community service. He was also ordered to pay Senator Paul over $580,000 in damages.
