(LibertySociety.com) – Amid a 2.5-year surge of illegal migrants crossing the southern border into the United States and an increase in opioid-related deaths in the United States, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is indicating that he supports the idea of cartels designating cartels as terrorist organizations. In an interview with Breitbart News, Speaker McCarthy spoke of the recent kidnapping of four Americans in Matamoros, Mexico, just across the border from Brownsville, Texas, stating “I think you have to designate them,” adding that they are using weapons against American citizens.
Speaker McCarthy reiterated the words of Chief Raul Ortiz of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), stating that “We do not have operational control of our border,” giving credit to Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott for taking on the responsibility of what should be controlled by the federal government. Speaker McCarthy indicated that he agrees that placing military assets at the southern border could help combat the cartels, utilizing military technology that CBP does not have.
Other lawmakers, including Representatives Michael Waltz, R-Fla., and Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, have proposed to use the force of the military to fight the cartels, with Rep. Waltz discussing the use of satellites and cyber technology to intervene in the operations of the cartels. Rep. Waltz says that cutting off the cartels’ ability to communicate and conduct transactions, as well as attacking their logistics, would significantly reduce their ability to operate. He believes that he can garner support from Democrats who are also looking for solutions to reduce the amount of fentanyl coming into the country and who are troubled by the increase in violence from the cartels.
Former President Donald Trump has also indicated he wants to treat cartels like terrorists, recently describing what he will do if he returns to the Oval Office, which will be to offer the same type of treatment to the cartels as he offered ISIS.
