(LibertySociety.com) – The Democrats’ favorite “fact-checking” website, Snopes, finally debunked the “very fine people” hoax from the Charlottesville protest in 2017. It is unclear what prompted the decision after seven years of allowing it to go unchecked.
However, some have speculated that the tight presidential race and internal discussions over Biden’s ability to handle a second term were part of the outlet’s decision to correct the record. Biden has repeatedly said that Trump’s alleged defense of neo-Nazis was the reason he decided to run for president. In reality, Trump condemned the group and was only defending the people who were peacefully protesting the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue.
The transcript of Trump’s remarks, which included the portion mainstream media outlets refused to air, should have been enough to debunk the hoax immediately. Such was not the case and Biden capitalized on the lie. In 2019, Biden was confronted about the matter when he went to the Iowa State Fair, but he became angry and again repeated the lie. Snopes ignored then-Vice President Mike Pence’s remarks during the 2020 vice presidential debate when he accurately corrected then-vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s claims. Snopes also refused to weigh in after Trump’s attorney played the full video of Trump’s remarks during the second impeachment trial.
In a June 20 post on X, formerly Twitter, Snopes finally told the truth. The outlet provided the transcript and rated the claim that he was complimenting the neo-Nazis as “false.” While it is unknown whether Biden’s team will notify him that he should stop repeating the lie, chances are, he will continue to use it on the campaign trail. After all, Biden rarely misses an opportunity to repeat various debunked hoaxes when talking about Trump. Time will tell if swing voters are swayed by Snopes’s newfound revelation, and there is still plenty of that left for the birth of new media hoaxes before November.
