(LibertySociety.com) – Residents of Springfield, Ohio, have voiced their concerns about the recent influx of Haitian migrants, citing issues like traffic safety and overwhelmed public services. The small city of 60,000 people has seen the arrival of tens of thousands of Haitian migrants, straining local resources and sparking fears among long-time residents.
Amid growing tensions, Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski stirred controversy with a social media post on his personal campaign page. In the post, Zuchowski suggested that supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris might find themselves hosting the migrants Harris supports. “When people ask me… What’s gonna happen if the Flip-Flopping, Laughing Hyena Wins??” Zuchowski wrote, referencing Harris. “I say… write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards!” He continued, “Sooo… when the Illegal human ‘Locust’ (which she supports!) Need places to live… We’ll already have the addresses of their New families… who supported their arrival!”
Sheriff Zuchowski’s comments have drawn backlash, with many interpreting his post as an incitement against Harris supporters. Fox News Digital reached out to Zuchowski and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office for comment, but no response has been reported.
The wave of migrants into Springfield has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over immigration, particularly as the city struggles to manage the sudden population increase. Local residents have reported long waits for social services and growing frustration over what they describe as deteriorating conditions. “It’s like living in a dystopian nightmare,” Springfield resident Diana Daniels told Fox & Friends. “This is a paycheck-to-paycheck… kind of town… The citizens that depend on our social services like health care… are waiting in line, and they’re not getting the services they need.”
The situation in Springfield gained national attention when Ohio Senator JD Vance took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that Haitian migrants were abducting and eating pets, a claim that was quickly picked up by former President Donald Trump during the second presidential debate. Trump echoed Vance’s assertions, saying, “They’re eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”
Local officials, however, have pushed back against these claims, stressing that there have been no credible reports of such activity. In a statement, the city clarified, “In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
As misinformation spreads, Springfield finds itself at the center of a heated political narrative, struggling to balance the realities of immigration with the fears and frustrations of its long-time residents.
