(LibertySociety.com) – Relations between China and the United States have risen to the forefront of the 118th Congress, with most concerns being tackled in a bipartisan manner. Senator Josh Hawley has always taken a hardline against China, warning lawmakers and Americans of the threat that they pose to the United States. Now Senator Hawley is taking aim at the previous trade decisions the United States has made with China, looking to impose tariffs on the nation and create jobs in the United States.
The Ending Normal Trade Relations with China Act is intended to end the multi-decade normal trade ties between the US and China. In addition, the legislation will come with higher tariffs on imports from China, which Senator Hawley says will create American jobs. He released a statement about the legislation, stating that a shift to the United States competing with China signals that “we need an agenda in Washington that will make our working class strong and independent.”
The two-page bill cuts right to the chase, which exemplifies Senator Hawley’s effort to offer single-issue, straightforward bills. In Senator Hawley’s statement, he blasted the hasty decisions made by policymakers in the past, stating that they “have only perpetuated the problem.” Senator Hawley is just one lawmaker whose goal is to end the free-trade status that China holds, with similar legislation coming from four other Republican lawmakers, including the freshman Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio. Their legislation would allow the President of the United States to determine whether or not China should be granted free-trade status. Organizations that advocate for the American worker have also pushed to end China’s free-trade status, stating that the continuation of it will only hurt American workers. According to Breitbart News, a study from CPA economists has also suggested that this change would lead to increased domestic output as well as the creation of millions of jobs.
