Senator Johnson Demands Explanation From IRS About Journalist Visit

(LibertySociety.com) – On March 9th, 2023, the day of his testimony before the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, journalist Matt Taibbi’s home was reportedly visited by IRS agents, where they left a note for him to call them. Taibbi was testifying about the discoveries he made during his investigation of the Twitter files, which alleged a high level of collusion between many government agencies and Twitter executives. Taibbi was granted access to the files by Elon Musk, who vowed to provide the public with information about how Twitter was operating before he purchased the company.

According to The Daily Caller, Senator Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., sent a letter to the IRS demanding answers following reports of the visit, asking several questions, including when the IRS found out about his scheduled testimony, names of the people who allowed the visit to his home, letters or logs of phone calls, if any, placed to Taibbi before the visit, records of the visit, including the records that were the reason for the visit, and whether or not a home visit is a common practice of the IRS when initial contact is made. Senator Johnson requested a response from the IRS by May 5th, 2023.

Senator Johnson told The Daily Caller that “The IRS owes the American people a full explanation” regarding the unannounced visit to Taibbi’s home, adding that the actions they took to contact him were not in alignment with the methods that are normally used when contacting taxpayers. He believes that the IRS should be transparent with the American people about the reason why they chose to make initial contact with him on the day of his Congressional testimony, in addition to how they went about it.
