(LibertySociety.com) – The US Secret Service was forced to apologize to a Massachusetts salon owner after Secret Service agents on Vice President Kamala Harris’ detail broke into her salon to use the bathroom.
The incident occurred on July 27 when Vice President Harris held a campaign event at the Colonial Theater in Pittsfield.
Alicia Powers, the owner of the nearby Four One Three Salon, told a local news outlet that she decided to close her business on the day of the vice president’s visit due to the ramped-up security.
On the day of the event, Powers watched via the security cameras as a Secret Service agent taped over the exterior camera. Security footage from inside the salon showed the agents and EMS workers using the bathroom inside.
Powers said she locked her business before leaving so the Secret Service must have broken in to gain access. She told Business Insider that as the agents were using the bathroom without her permission, the security alarm in her salon was “going off.”
When she returned to the salon that afternoon, the EMS workers told her that they were instructed to use the bathroom in her salon by someone dressed in black, leading Powers to suspect that it was the Secret Service.
She said the bathroom in her salon was “disgustingly dirty.”
Powers told another local outlet that the agents did not remove the tape on the security camera outside and left the back door of her business unlocked.
Powers contacted the police and eventually received a call from a representative for the Secret Service who apologized and said that the agents should have obtained her permission before using her facilities.
The Secret Service said it would pay for any damages and cleaning.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service said in a statement to Boston.com that the agency had contacted the salon owner and reiterated that Secret Service personnel should not have entered the premises without permission.
