(LibertySociety.com) – A tragic school shooting took place Wednesday morning at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, leaving four people dead and several others injured. The suspect, a 14-year-old student, is in custody.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), two students and two teachers were killed. Nine other individuals were taken to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds. The shooter, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, was arrested at the scene. Officials stated that Gray will be tried as an adult and charged with murder.
The shooting began around 10:23 a.m., prompting a swift response from local law enforcement and emergency services. Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith confirmed that police received the first reports of an active shooter shortly after 9:30 a.m. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and students were evacuated to the football stadium.
At this time, the identities of the victims have not been officially released. However, a woman named Katie Phenix shared on social media that her father, David Phenix, was one of the injured. He was shot in the hip and foot but is in stable condition following surgery.
President Biden issued a statement condemning the violence and expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. He also called for renewed efforts to pass stronger gun safety legislation, saying, “We cannot continue to accept this as normal.” Biden highlighted the need for measures like banning assault weapons and requiring universal background checks.
Former President Donald Trump also commented on the tragedy, sharing his grief and calling the shooter a “sick and deranged monster.” Both leaders emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence in the U.S.
Law enforcement, including the FBI and ATF, are investigating the incident. Authorities have asked for patience as they continue to gather information about the shooting. Governor Brian Kemp has directed state resources to assist and has urged people to pray for the victims and their families.
