(LibertySociety.com) – Following Donald Trump’s decisive win over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, actress and outspoken Trump critic Rosie O’Donnell is reigniting calls to abolish the Electoral College. The former talk show host posted a TikTok video urging her followers to push for a popular vote system instead, labeling the current electoral framework as “racist.” However, O’Donnell seemed to overlook the fact that Trump won not only the Electoral College but also the popular vote in Tuesday’s election.
In the video, O’Donnell, visibly somber and appearing under the weather, said, “And how ’bout we get rid of the Electoral College? Anybody like that? Anyone? It’s a popular vote we need. Who gets the most votes wins — one vote, one person. No racist math in the equation.” She claimed the current system was unfair, though her remarks seemed out of sync with this year’s results, where Trump captured both the popular and electoral votes.
According to Breitbart News, Trump won 50.9% of the popular vote, a clear lead over Harris’s 47.6%. His current standing in the Electoral College is at 295 votes, with Nevada and Arizona’s pending results expected to push him to 312. Harris ended with 226 electoral votes, making it a substantial victory for Trump.
O’Donnell has been a vocal Trump opponent for years, and her frustration with the Electoral College is not new. She has frequently criticized the institution, especially after Trump’s first victory in 2016, which sparked widespread debate over the relevance of the Electoral College in modern elections.
Interestingly, O’Donnell’s video didn’t stop at advocating for a popular vote system. She also stirred controversy recently by sharing unfounded claims about an alleged assassination attempt on Trump. In September, she posted another TikTok video casting doubt on the incident, implying that what happened may not have been an actual bullet wound, despite reports confirming the nature of the attack.
O’Donnell’s call to abolish the Electoral College aligns with broader discussions within the Democratic Party, where some advocates argue the system is outdated and disproportionately favors less-populated states. However, with Trump’s sweeping victory, any efforts to amend or remove the Electoral College are likely to face significant opposition, as Republicans maintain a strong position in both public support and political representation.
While O’Donnell’s post sparked conversations online, it’s unclear if this renewed debate over the Electoral College will gain traction, especially considering that Trump’s 2024 win satisfied both electoral and popular vote requirements.
