(LibertySociety.com) – On July 13, Secretary of State Alejandro Mayorkas warned Haitians and Cubans who might try to come to America by sea that they would not be welcome in the US. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) joined a chorus of other Conservative voices condemning the secretary for his remarks.
Over the weekend, DeSantis criticized the Biden administration for saying it wouldn’t help the Cuban people. The governor urged the president to restore the internet on the island after the communist regime cut off access to citizens.
I urge President Biden to assist in providing internet access to the people of Cuba standing up against communist oppression and demanding a voice after decades of suffering under a cruel dictatorship.https://t.co/fjSKNxuchW pic.twitter.com/br4iPHZ4k1

The Biden admin maintains they do not want Cubans and Haitians to travel by sea.
Hurricane season is underway in the Atlantic region. Days before Mayorkas made his comments, nine Cubans were lost at sea. Additionally, the majority of the people migrating from Cuba travel to Central or South America first and then enter the US through Mexico. This route has become more difficult in recent years, though.
Republicans have criticized the administration for Mayorkas’ remarks. There’s a widespread belief the president is making the crisis political because the majority of Cuban-Americans are Conservatives. The truth likely lies somewhere in the middle.
