RNC Chair Wants Candidates To Sign Loyalty Pledge To Take Part in Debates

RNC Chair Says Candidates Must Sign Loyalty Pledge

(LibertySociety.com) – Ronna McDaniel, who is fresh off her victory for a new term as Chair of the Republican National Committee, is pushing for candidates to sign a loyalty pledge to the Republican Party in order to participate in 2024 Presidential debates. Prior to her re-election, McDaniel expressed her belief that all Republicans who run for election should vow to get behind the candidate who wins the primary election, specifically citing Kari Lake’s loss in Arizona, where her opponent, Karrin Robson, refused to endorse Lake after losing to her in the primary election.

When referring to the loyalty pledge on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday February 26th, 2023, McDaniel said “I think it’s kind of a no-brainer, right?” McDaniel expects the pledge to be a part of the rules of the debate, although an official list of rules has not been released. She added that she believes candidates who ask voters to support them should also support whomever the voters choose as the nominee.

Former President Donald Trump also signed a pledge back before the 2016 election. When asked about his willingness to sign the loyalty pledge this time around, a spokesperson for his campaign told CNN that he “will support the Republican nominee because it will be him,” avoiding answering if he would agree to sign the pledge in order to debate. Trump has previously stated that it would depend on who the nominee is, which is what he said in 2016 even after signing the pledge then. McDaniel believes that all the candidates will sign it, even the former president, as the goal for them is to be united and ultimately defeat Joe Biden and the Democrat party in 2024.
