(LibertySociety.com) – Members of the Kennedy clan condemned former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for endorsing Republican nominee Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election, describing his endorsement of the former president as a “betrayal.”
RFK Jr. announced on August 23 that he was filing to have his name removed from the ballot in key battleground states so that he did not draw votes away from Trump. Kennedy also endorsed the former president, saying that his support for the Republican nominee was motivated by the same causes that prompted him to leave the Democrat Party in the first place: the war in Ukraine, Free Speech, and “the war on our children.”
Five of RFK Jr.’s siblings released a statement following the candidate’s announcement in which they endorsed Vice President Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, saying they believed that Harris-Walz would bring their vision of “an America filled with hope” for a better future, “defined” by individual freedom and economic promise.
The Kennedy siblings said RFK Jr.’s decision to endorse Trump betrayed the values held by their father and the entire Kennedy family.
The statement was signed by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Kerry Kennedy, Courtney Kennedy, Chris Kennedy, and Rory Kennedy.
Robert F. Kennedy’s grandson, former Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III, reposted the statement on X, adding, “Well said.”
RFK Jr.’s cousin Jack Schlossberg said in a post on X that his cousin was “for sale” and was “bedfellows” with Donald Trump. He claimed that Vice President Harris was “for the people” and said the decision to vote for her “just got easier.”
In response to the condemnation from his family, RFK Jr. told Fox News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream that he understood that his siblings were “troubled” by his decision but said they needed to find a way to “disagree with each other and still love each other.”
Kennedy also thanked his wife Cheryl Hines for her “unconditional love” as he made a decision she was “very uncomfortable” with.
