(LibertySociety.com) – One of the Israeli hostages rescued from the Gaza Strip is now suing an American nonprofit for having ties to the radical militant group Hamas which held him captive for almost 250 days.
Twenty-two-year-old Almog Meir Jan was one of about 200 hostages taken by Hamas from Israel into Gaza during the radical militant group’s attack on the Jewish state on Oct. 7, 2023, which left about 1,200 people dead.
On Saturday, June 8, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted its largest hostage rescue mission since the war with Hamas began, securing Jan and three other hostages during the operation, which killed over 200 Palestinians, some of whom were children. The other three hostages Rescued were 26-year-old Noa Argamani, 27-year-old Andrey Kozlov, and 41-year-old Shlomi Ziv. The four of them were held captive for 246 days.
The hostages were recovered from the residence of Abdallah Aljamal in Nuseirat. Aljamal, who served as spokesperson for a Gaza labor ministry run by Hamas and was a contributor to the Palestine Chronicle, was killed during the operation. The parent company that runs the Palestine Chronicle is a tax-exempt media organization called People Media Project.
After the hostage rescue last month and the connection to the Palestine Chronicle was revealed, GOP Rep. Mike Lawler of New York called on Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York to strip the People Media Project of its tax-exempt status.
Jan is suing People Media Project’s editor-in-chief Ramzy Broud and the charity’s co-founder John Harvey, both of whom serve on the People Media Project’s board of directors, for employing Aljamal and giving him a platform in the US to “disseminate Hamas propaganda” on the taxpayer’s dime due to the charitable organization’s tax-exempt status. The suit argues that while the plaintiff was imprisoned, the defendants allowed Aljamal to “use their platform to whitewash” the militant group’s crimes and generate “international support” for its cause.
The lawsuit states that its purpose is to hold the Palestine Chronicle “and its directors” accountable for “knowingly” supporting a member of Hamas as the plaintiff was held hostage in that operative’s home.
