(LibertySociety.com) – For over two years now, Republicans have been calling on the Biden Administration to secure the United States southern border and address the fentanyl crisis. Last night in his State of the Union Speech, President Joe Biden introduced a father whose daughter overdosed on fentanyl, acknowledging the massive problem with the drug in the United States. After telling the story of the daughter of his guest, he called for a crackdown “to stop fentanyl production, sale, and trafficking,” adding that more equipment is needed a the border to detect it. He also called on shipping companies like FedEx to be able to do more inspections.
In addition, Biden called for fentanyl traffickers to be punished more severely, after noting earlier that over 70,000 Americans every year are dying from overdoses of the drug. This number received jeers from Republicans, who blamed President Biden for the deaths due to his perceived failure to handle the crisis. The New York Post reported on the outburst, adding additional commentary from Republicans during President Biden’s speech. One Congressman reportedly yelled, “It’s your fault!” during the speech.
The House Oversight Committee held a hearing about the crisis at the border just hours before President Biden gave his address. During the hearing, Democrat Representative Katie Porter, D-CA, framed the spike of fentanyl seizures at the border as a success. However, Fox News reported that she to take into account that if more is being seized, it could mean that there are more smuggling attempts taking place. Fox News reported on Rep. Porter’s comments, adding that the Chief Patrol Agent for the Tuscon sector verified that there is fentanyl getting through that isn’t seized.
