(LibertySociety.com) – Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) and Senator JD Vance (R-OH) clashed on Monday in a public exchange that centered on Vance’s visit to Minneapolis, but Vice President Kamala Harris became a central figure in the argument. The confrontation began after a Star Tribune reporter, Ryan Faircloth, tweeted a summary of Vance’s visit to Minneapolis, claiming that Vance had described the city as being in decline. The comment was reportedly made in the context of criticizing Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, and linking her leadership to the struggles of cities like Minneapolis and Detroit.
Phillips responded strongly, accusing Vance of fear-mongering and criticizing his lack of support for the city. He blamed the destruction caused by George Floyd’s murder and the COVID-19 pandemic, both of which occurred under former President Donald Trump’s administration, Vance’s political ally.
Vance, however, quickly pushed back, clarifying that the phrase “city in decline” was not his own, but rather an editorial addition by the journalist. He acknowledged that Minneapolis had faced significant challenges but argued that the destruction was not due to George Floyd’s murder alone. Instead, he blamed politicians like Phillips and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for allowing the 2020 riots to escalate, leading to $500 million in damage. Vance linked this leadership to Harris, who selected Walz as her vice presidential pick, warning that her presidency would continue to encourage lawlessness and a lack of support for law enforcement.
Vance concluded by contrasting the leadership of Harris and Trump, arguing that a vote for Harris would allow for more violent crime and the undermining of law enforcement, whereas Trump would restore safety and order. The exchange highlighted the intense political battle between Democrats and Republicans, particularly on issues of public safety and law enforcement.
