(LibertySociety.com) – Twelve attorneys who worked under former Republican presidents signed a letter endorsing Kamala Harris, claiming that a second Trump presidency would be a threat to democracy and “undermine the rule of law.”
The lawyers, who worked in the Reagan and George W. Bush administrations, described the election as a “binary choice” and dismissed other Republicans who have said they would vote for neither Trump nor Harris. Instead, the lawyers said they would vote for Harris as a way to prevent Trump, whom they described as “guilty of grave wrongdoing” and “unfit, dangerous, and detached from reality,” from returning to the White House.
The lawyers urged “patriotic Republicans” and independent voters to also support Harris in November.
The lawyers conceded that they did not agree with Harris on policy but believed that her agenda would be subjected to constitutional checks and balances.
They claimed that Vice President Harris would respect the results of the election regardless of the outcome and would not pressure public officials or commission fake electors.
They also blasted Trump for describing the news media as “the enemy of the people” and claimed that Vice President Harris would not demonize the press.
Among those signing the letter was noted anti-Trump cable news contributor J. Michael Luttig, the retired federal appeals court judge who last week announced that he would be voting for a Democrat nominee for the first time in his life.
Former Reagan administration attorneys Benedict Cohen, Peter Rusthoven, Peter Keisler, Robert Kruger, Wendell Willkie II, Phillip Brady, and Alan Charles Raul also signed the letter.
Bush administration lawyers John Mitnick, John Bellinger III, and Nicholas Rostow were also included in the letter.
On Monday, over 200 former Republican staffers who worked for Presidents George HW Bush and George W. Bush, and staffers for Senators John McCain and Mitt Romney, also announced that they would be voting for Vice President Harris over Trump, claiming that the former president would “irreparably” jeopardize democracy.
