Pence Campaign Targets Trump and Populism

(LibertySociety.com) – Former Vice President Mike Pence is on a mission to sway voters into reverting to traditional Republican politics, taking a more aggressive stance than usual. During a speech at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, Pence expressed his belief that the Republican Party will be destroyed if it continues to allow the populist movement to reign. Pence urged other Republican politicians to reject the “siren song of populism.” He argued that populists resemble the far-left wing of the Democrat Party, labeling both as “fellow travelers on the same road to ruin.”

Pence’s comments were aimed at lawmakers who are still supporting former President Trump, but voters who support the 45th President and his policies will likely take offense to his comments. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently made a similar misstep in August when he insinuated that Trump voters are unable to think for themselves. Although candidates often take swipes at their opponents, Pence and DeSantis must appeal to voters who currently support President Trump if they want to be able to beat him in the primaries.

Pence also took jabs at DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy during his speech. He torched DeSantis for his executive overreach with Disney after the private company took a political stance that he did not agree with. He said that Republicans should return to their roots of limiting the power of the government. He attacked Ramaswamy for his belief that the inheritance tax should be increased, noting that he advocated for it in one of his recent books. Pence also accused lawmakers of abandoning their commitment to allies around the world, claiming they only care about American interests. Pence has made similar remarks in the past when justifying his call for unconditional support for Ukraine. Pence spent a good portion of his speech arguing for a return to the policies of President Ronald Reagan’s administration, offering up a quote from one of the 40th President’s historical speeches.
