Pelosi Supports Bill to Fund Migrants’ Home Purchases

(LibertySociety.com) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed support for California’s controversial bill, AB 1840, which would allow undocumented immigrants to receive financial assistance in buying homes through the state’s California Dream for All Program. This bill, passed by California lawmakers, would extend home purchase aid, typically reserved for first-time homeowners, to undocumented immigrants, making them eligible for taxpayer-funded loans.

Pelosi’s comments came during an appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, where she discussed immigration reform and the broader impact of such measures on the U.S. economy. When Maher pressed her about the shift in the Democratic Party’s stance on immigration—particularly in relation to housing assistance—Pelosi defended the bill, arguing that it represented “the American Dream being available to more people,” rather than offering free housing.

She pointed to former President Ronald Reagan’s speech about the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of America’s openness to immigrants. Citing Reagan’s words, Pelosi framed California’s bill as part of this legacy, suggesting that opening opportunities for homeownership aligns with the country’s historical values. “We are very blessed here with beautiful diversity,” she said, hinting that other states might follow California’s lead.

When Maher directly asked if she would vote for the bill, Pelosi admitted she wasn’t fully familiar with its specifics but emphasized her general support for making homeownership available to all, including undocumented immigrants. She reiterated that her long-term goal is comprehensive immigration reform, which would shift undocumented individuals to a legal status.

Pelosi’s comments reflect a growing debate over immigration policy, particularly as California continues to pass legislation aimed at supporting undocumented immigrants. For Pelosi, expanding access to housing for all residents, regardless of legal status, fits within a broader vision of economic reform and inclusivity. Whether other states will follow California’s lead remains to be seen.
