During an interview with Christiane Amanpour on CNN, Pelosi was quick to praise Biden, calling him “fabulous,” but admitted she had worries about the campaign’s direction. She said, “I think his legacy is a very substantial one for our country,” while also expressing fears that it could be tarnished by the current state of the campaign.
Pelosi and other top Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, had reportedly encouraged Biden to step aside after his lackluster performance during a debate in June. These conversations reflected the growing concern within the Democratic Party about Biden’s age and its potential impact on both his candidacy and the broader success of the party in the 2024 election cycle. Pelosi clarified that her concerns were about the campaign, not Biden’s presidency, emphasizing her respect for his achievements. “I didn’t want that [his legacy] to be lost,” she added.
Pelosi admitted that she hadn’t spoken to Biden since July but highlighted that her respect for him remains undiminished. She also touched on the generational aspect of Biden’s decision, acknowledging that his age was a factor in the calls for him to step down. In August, Biden confirmed that key Democratic figures had urged him to reconsider running for a second term.
