Oversight Committee Issues Request To CBP

Oversight Committee Seeks Transcribed Interviews With Border Chiefs

(LibertySociety.com) – Representative James Comer, R-KY, is not letting up in his pursuit of fixing the problems at the U.S. southern border, seeking to interview all border chiefs of every sector. Two of nine border chiefs testified at a hearing in the beginning of February. However, Comer accused Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in January of trying to obstruct oversight by Congress when he initially refused to let the rest of the border chiefs testify before Congress.

The DHS has already hired legal counsel in anticipation of possible impeachment proceedings. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy recently called on Mayorkas to stop lying to the public about what is happening at the border and plans to base his decision about whether to impeach him on what is discovered during the hearings and investigations in the House. Speaker McCarthy has advocated for a return to policies that were in place during the Trump administration.

Comer expressed his interest in interviewing every border chief since each sector has different needs and encounters with illegal migrants and cartel members. In his recent letter requesting interviews, he expressed the belief each of the border chiefs will have “valuable information” that can help improve the Committee’s understanding of what’s happening at the border.

Record numbers of illegal migrants and fentanyl have made it through into the interior of the United States since the Biden administration began. Recently, President Biden has attempted to implement new policies for asylum seekers that he claims will decrease the number of people coming into the country illegally, but Republicans have been critical of his methods. Over twenty states filed a lawsuit in January to stop a new border law that creates a legal path for some migrants to enter, claiming that it’s a misuse of parole authority.
