(LibertySociety.com) – With the departure of Olympic hopeful Simone Biles and the political statements made by the US women’s soccer team, viewership of the Tokyo Olympic Games pales in comparison to those of the games in Rio. Comparable ratings on the first night of competitions were down 32% and plummeted to a whopping 46% decrease on Monday.
Monmouth University conducted a poll to try to make sense of the lack of interest in this year’s typically popular summer games. Of 804 adults, it showed 36% weren’t interested in watching the Olympic Games this year. About a third of them cited the pandemic as the reason, and more than a third blamed the “overemphasis on politics.”

People who watch the Olympic Games and want to feel a sense of pride in their country don’t want the games clouded by political statements.
Some say part of the low viewership may be due to the time difference between the United States and Tokyo and the delay from 2020. In addition, the excitement from people who usually cheer from the stands is almost non-existent due to COVID-19 precautions. Between the bare gallery, athletes playing politics, and the pandemic still at large, the Olympic Games aren’t the escape they used to be.
